Google Goggles

There is an interesting new feature for Gmail called goggles.  Written by Google Gmail engineer Jon Perlow, it is an optional feature that users can activate in order to prevent them from inadvisably sending email messages while in an inebriated state.

The program presents a basic math problem to users.  If they can’t provide the correct answer within a certain time, they are prohibited from sending the message.  Here’s Google’s description:

“Google strives to make the world’s information useful. Mail you send late night on the weekends may be useful but you may regret it the next morning. Solve some simple math problems and you’re good to go. Otherwise, get a good night’s sleep and try again in the morning. After enabling this feature, you can adjust the schedule in the “General” settings page.”

The feature’s name is apparently derived from the syndrome call “beer goggles” in which things reportedly look better after a couple of drinks.  Since this is outside my realm of experience, I am relying on the expertise of others for this information.  Regardless, I see no need to personally activate this feature.

However, if they could stop me from sending messages to unintended people, that would be something I could really use!
